Also known as nasal cannula, Respiratory Cannulae are used to provide oxygen when there is a requirement of low or medium concentration of oxygen with patient in a stable condition. The amount of oxygen delivered depends on the breathing rate and pattern of the recipient. Since the oxygen given depends on the patient’s breathing rate, these devices are not applicable in acute cases where patients need controlled oxygen therapy. Normally flow rates of 1 liter to 4 liters are used, however, flow rates of 6 liters can also be given but this might lead to excessive dryness and uneasiness to patient. The benefit of using these devices is that the patient with chronic respiratory problem can eat, drink or talk while in use.
