An Evaporating Basin is a small dish like apparatus used to evaporate liquids to obtain the dry forms of the substances dissolved. Also called evaporating dish, evaporating basins typically have a 100130 mm diameter with the outer rim having a pout to aid in pouring of liquids. These are normally made of white ceramic having 2-3 mm thickness to facilitate heating of the basin.
For heating purpose, the basin is placed on top of a wire gauze and tripod stand. Bunsen burner is normally used to heat the basin. The primary objective of using an evaporating basin for such purpose is to avoid waste substances to run off in the surrounding environment. The solid material left in the basin after evaporation is then disposed of safely.
