A Separating Funnel is a piece of laboratory glassware used in liquid-liquid extractions to separate the components of a mixture between two non-interactive (immiscible) solvent phases having different densities. Generally, one of the phases will be aqueous, and the other a non-polar lipophilic organic solvent.
Also known as separator funnel or separation funnel, it has the shape of a cone surmounted by a hemisphere. The funnel incorporates a stopper at the top and stopcock at the bottom. Separating funnels used in laboratories are usually made of borosilicate glass and its stopcocks are made of glass or PTFE. It is mostly found in sizes between 50 ml and 3 ml. It is very useful device for separating the particles contained in a liquid mixture..
