Eudiometer is a kind of laboratory glassware that measures the change in volume of a gas mixture that happens due to physical or chemical change. Similar to a graduated cylinder, it comes with a closed top and the open bottom, which is supposed to remain immersed in water or mercury. The device can take several forms as per the type of reaction being measured.
Eudiometer is most commonly found in two sizes: 50 ml and 100 ml. In this device, the liquid traps a sample of gas in the cylinder, and the graduation helps in measuring volume of the gas. In some reactions, two platinum wires are fixed at the sealed end so that an electric spark can be created between them. The electric spark can start a reaction in the gas mixture and consequently, the graduation on the cylinder can be read to determine the change in volume.
