Stopcocks are valves that regulate the flow of liquid through a pipe or a faucet. Stopcocks come in a variety of forms and all these forms have a glass shell added with a plug which ensures a seal. The plug can be opened to some maximum bore diameter, which is used as a reference for size such as a 4mm bore through a teflon plug renders it a category "4mm teflon stopcock."
Stopcocks are also available in other materials like ground glass. This type of stopcock has a glass plug with a hole or holes through it that allows closure or opening with a turn of the plug. Such types of stopcocks require stopcock grease to lubricate and seal the plug and shell. However, this can be a problem if there is a danger of contamination from grease.
