Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP) refers to plasma, which is collected after blood donation, then froze for preservation. Human blood comprises blood component and a liquid portion, which is known as plasma. After blood donation, only the blood component is further used, where as the liquid portion, i.e plasma is extracted out using a plasma expressor and then froze and preserved in packages. Fresh Frozen Plasma is used for blood transfusion. The use of plasma and its products has evolved over a period of four decades. Fresh frozen plasma contains components of the coagulation, fibrinolytic and complement systems; the proteins that maintain oncotic pressure and modulate immunity; and other proteins, fats, carbohydrates and minerals.
