A viscometer is a scientific instrument that measures the viscosity of a fluid. The instrument determines viscosity of liquids under one flow condition. For differential flow condition of liquids, the viscosity is measured by another useful lab instruments called a rheometer.

Viscosity can be defined as the drag caused by the relative motion of the surface of an object and the flow of liquid. The viscometer comes in several designs depending on the type of application requirements. Some of the common areas wherein the viscometers found application are wort measurement in beer, measurements on polymer solutions, inks, low-viscosity oils and various other applications in the biotechnology and the pharmaceutical industry.
