A Nephelo Meter is an analytical instrument used for measuring suspended particulates in a liquid or gas colloid. The meter measures suspended particulates by employing a light beam and a light detector stationed at one side of the source beam. Particle density is calculated as a function of the light reflected into the detector from the particles. The amount of light reflected is determined by particles’ shape, color and reflectivity.

The main uses of Nephelo meters relate to air quality measurement for pollution monitoring, climate monitoring and visibility. The instrument has different levels of sensitivity depending on the individual designs. It can be used for varied environmental monitoring applications.
