The scientific domain is vast with a number of sectors and sub sectors under it. Almost every activity in this domain is subjected to tests, collection of datas, etc. which aids in effective research and result. These are done with the usage of specific scientific instruments, applicable as per the research or testing involved. The range of laboratory equipments made in India include glass and porcelain laboratory instruments such as diluters, evaporators, electronic balances, centrifuge products, test tubes, filtration units, petri dishes and gloves. Ludhiana (Punjab) is considered the hub of scientific instruments manufacturing and exports.

The Department of Science & Technology of India seriously encourages and supports the projects and programs for indigenous development of scientific instruments manufacturing under its Instrument Development Programme (IDP). About 55 projects are currently being implemented at various R&D Organizations in the country. Identified areas of instrumentation are: Analytical, Medical, Environmental Monitoring & Pollution Control, Test & Measuring, Food Processing, Geo-scientific, Agri-electronic, Textile & Leather Instrumentation and Sensors. With increasing expertise in manufacturing scientific and laboratory instruments and equipments, manufacturers, suppliers and exporters of scientific and laboratory instruments from India are looking towards establishing newer markets and business relationships across the globe.

There are thousands of laboratories operating under the scientific domain. Scientific instruments are part of a laboratory equipment, but are considered more sophisticated than other testing or measuring instruments. A scientific instrument is more often accompanies or coupled with a data logger for data collection. The sizes of scientific instruments vary in size.
